The One and Only "I Am" / Soli Deo Gloria
Notes
this series aims to build critical thinking skills along with a sense of wonder for the created and unknown world.
Genesis 1:1 (ESV) In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
The Bible Assumes Creation
Rom 1:25 “because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen.”
Col 3:10 “and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.”
Matt 19:4 “He answered, “Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female,”
• it’s important to note that for the people writing the bible, God is simply assumed. That means that none of the authors are very much interested in the proof of a God.
• Moreover, the authors assumed that all things were created by something or someone
• while the bible doesn’t insist on the existence of god or a creator, it DOES insist on the central idea that the one god Yahweh IS that same creator. and further, that all things were created by him and him alone.
If i say, “turn the light off please.” I assume that the light can be turned off. I’m not communicating a hypothesis about why i believe that the light bulb should have the ability to turn off. It’s assumed becuase the discussion of it is not valuable to what i need right now. Turn the light off. When Revelation 14:7 asks us to worship the creator, the discussion isn’t about whether a god exists. no proof is given, because no proof is needed. It’s simply assumed and the statement stops making sense without that basic assumption.
Deut 6:4 ““Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.”
This passage teaches plainly, there is one unified and undivided God. The author of scripture clear teach and believe that this one Elohim is the also the one and only creator of all things seen and unseen
Col 1:16 “For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.”
Do we assume a creator?
I think it’s clear we should, otherwise you can’t really approach this book and intend for your study to produce what the original authors put in. You can’t read the bible without this assumption. This is why throwing a bible at an atheist does basically nothing. the base assumption isn’t there.
We assume a creator when we
honor our father and mother. Eph 6:4
Ephesians 6:2–4 ESV
“Honor your father and mother” (this is the first commandment with a promise), “that it may go well with you and that you may live long in the land.” Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
respect and steward the planet wisely. Deut 11:10-15, Jer 2:7
Deuteronomy 11:10–15 ESV
For the land that you are entering to take possession of it is not like the land of Egypt, from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and irrigated it, like a garden of vegetables. But the land that you are going over to possess is a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water by the rain from heaven, a land that the Lord your God cares for. The eyes of the Lord your God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. “And if you will indeed obey my commandments that I command you today, to love the Lord your God, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, he will give the rain for your land in its season, the early rain and the later rain, that you may gather in your grain and your wine and your oil. And he will give grass in your fields for your livestock, and you shall eat and be full.
Jeremiah 2:7 ESV
And I brought you into a plentiful land to enjoy its fruits and its good things. But when you came in, you defiled my land and made my heritage an abomination.
treat our fellow man with dignity. 1 Pt 2:17, James 2:1-4, Prv 22:2
1 Peter 2:17 ESV
Honor everyone. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the emperor.
James 2:1–4 ESV
My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, “You sit here in a good place,” while you say to the poor man, “You stand over there,” or, “Sit down at my feet,” have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts?
Proverbs 22:2 ESV
The rich and the poor meet together; the Lord is the Maker of them all.
Psalm 19:1–2 ESV
The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge.
Romans 1:20 ESV
For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
choose to seek god in others. Mat 25:38
Matthew 25:38–40 ESV
And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’
Genesis 1:27 ESV
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
• quick note here, if i say, humanity is strong, is it the same as saying humanity are strong? can i say the city is wicked? or should i say, the city are wicked? there are plurals in a city, and plurals in humanity, but we refer to them as a single unit for many reasons
• Adam in hebrew is many things. it can mean dirt, or it can be a name, or it can be the word used for mankind.
• I choose to assume that the author of genesis was inspired to mean all three in this case.
Genesis 1:27 (pastor’s retranslation) So God formed dirt in his own image, in the image of God he created the man ; male and female he created mankind .
Another word for assume
I’ve used this word throughout the message in lue of another word you may have noticed i haven’t used
Faith
Belief is a matter of perspective. Everyone’s beliefs vary because everyone sees the world from a slightly different perspective.
Hebrews 11:1 ESV
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
